arrival in the United States

o U.S. border agents are required to verify that every international student arriving in the U.S. has a valid student visa.

o Please expect and plan for delays when going through U.S. customs and border control.

o This is especially important to consider when purchasing your airline tickets.

o You will be required to go through customs and border patrol at the airport in which you first enter the U.S.

o If you have a connecting flight from that airport, please plan sufficient time so that you do not miss your next flight.

Arrival in Laramie

Information about your arrival

Orientation and Arrival Dates:

You must be in Laramie prior to mandatory orientation. You must plan to arrive in Laramie on August 19th or 20th so that you will be here in time for MANDATORY ORIENTATION on Thursday, August 21st. You will also be sent information by the International Students & Scholars Office.

Arrival Information:

The Education Abroad Office offers a pick-up service from the Laramie airport, but you MUST complete the the Arrival Information Form. You must plan your travel so that you arrive in Laramie between 0800 and 2100.

o You can fly directly into the Laramie Airport (LAR) via United Airlines (approximately a 40 minute flight), or into the Denver International Airport (DEN). Even if you are flying into Denver on a different airline, you can book the separate United Airlines flight from Denver to Laramie (two flights a day - one in the morning, one in the evening).

  • NOTE: flying to Laramie is the option our office recommends.

o If you arrive in Denver too late to take the United Airlines flight up to Laramie, your best option will be to spend a night in a Denver Airport Hotel, and to take the morning United Airlines Flight up to Laramie.

  • Each of the hotels near the Denver airport provides a free shuttle service from and to the airport.
  • If you book your hotel reservation early, you may be able to find good rates online.
  • There are NO hotels near the Laramie Airport. It is not possible to spend a night there.
  • There is no public transportation from the Laramie Airport into town.

o If you fly into Denver and do not want to take the flight up to Laramie, you will need to make a reservation on the Greyhound Bus for transportation to Laramie (the trip takes approximately 4 hours.)

  • Make this reservation online here.

Housing and Meal Plan Information:

Housing: Note that you must plan to arrive in Laramie on August 19th or 20th, but Fall housing does not begin until August 23rd. Therefore, you must also apply for Summer housing for the days you will be in Laramie prior to August 23rd (Summer housing is $35/night).

  • If you will be living in a UW apartment, it is not possible to check in to your apartment any later than 20:00.
  • If you will be living in an apartment and will arrive in Laramie later than 19:00, you must plan to stay in a hotel that night.

Meal Plan: Note that you must arrive on August 19th or 20th, but meal plans for residence halls will not begin until August 23rd. It is strongly recommended that you purchase a meal plan for those days so that you have access to meals on campus during that time.  You will be sent additional information via email prior to your arrival.
